The piston is one of the most important parts in the modern engine. It has to be light and firm, able to sustain mechanical high loads and heat influence, and also possess work surface of a high wear resistance. The piston is affected by dynamic forces of a cyclic character – changing tensions, pressure and acceleration of mass, which means that the pistons need to be made of material with high breaking point at room and higher temperatures.
However the aluminium alloys applied now don't fully meet the growing demands for the material for combustion engine pistons working in extreme thermal and mechanical conditions (accelerated engine, sport or tuning). The lighter a piston is the less the moments of inertia and the deterioration, and the higher the promptness and the power of the engine. The harder the material is the better the piston will sustain huge mechanical and heat loads in the compression chamber.
Standard aluminium alloy pistons are a bit heavy for those engines. However the process of manufacturing magnesium alloys that could be used at the temperatures inside car engines has only been developed recently.
The main advantage of the heat resistant magnesium alloys manufactured using the method of high-speed chrystallization compared to aluminium alloys for combustion engine pistons is their higher strength-to-weithg ratio.
The initial material for combustion engine pistons is a strained billet made of the granules of heat-resistant magesium alloy VMD10gr.
