Today the most promising cargo aircrafts are lighter-than-air vehicles.
Compared to airplanes and helicopters airships possess a number of undeniable advantages. Their aerostatic nature means they do not require power to support themselves, consequently airships have the ability to hover in the air and manage without aerodromes as well as having a much larger range and lifting capacity than those of airplanes.
Airships can be used to transport bulky and heavy freights such as generators, turbines, or parts for oil processing plants. This equipment is usually divided into parts and then transported separately using water, motor and railway transport. An airship working as an "air tap" is able to deliver the cargo in one piece as heavy loads delivery airships can be used for transporting bulky but light freights, such as for instance flowers.
Although they can't possibly compete with airplanes in speed, and with ships in tonnage, the distance they can cover in a couple of days would take a month and a half of travel by sea. They can also outdo motor transport in some respects: an airship will deliver flowers from London to Amsterdam much faster than a car. Not to mention the interest create with tourists. Flying low one can admire marvellous views of landscapes so the advantages of creating European cruises become obvious.
According to "CargoLifter" figures, the market of freight service for a cargo over 100 tonnes and 25 metres wide, high or long is estimated at one million dollars per year.
Besides every year this number 12% increases, and its growth rate is higher than any other cargo sector. The experts think that airships can gain over 10% of that market.
Our specialists are working on a a very promising and up to date project for the new generation cargo airship DZ-N1 with the tonnage of 180.
The need to reduce the mass of the existing aeronautical devices stipulates the use of high strength granulated magnesium alloy MA2-1gr for the airships frames which will not only make the construction strong but also add to its survivability.
